Short tunnels in manured veg plot

Since I added manure to my veg plot and planted out pea and bean plants, something has been digging neat round tunnels, 5/6" across, 12-18" long under the plants. The tunnels go nowhere so I'm assuming are for feeding (worms?) purpose. Since putting barriers around the plants, they've been ok but now tunnels have started in an unplanted section. Badgers or something else?

Hi Jmsm. It sounds very much like rats to me.

Can't see why rats would do that. The tunnels don't go anywhere and I can't imagine rats would be after worms, etc. I'm thinking something at least as big as badgers or foxes. Very neat and tidy tunnels and bigger than mole tunnels.

Neither badgers nor foxes build tunnels. Do you have rabbits around you? Badgers dig several large scrapes when looking for worms and basically trash gardens in their food hunting.

Yes. There are rabbits around but why would they build short tunnels that go nowhere, given they are vegetarian?
