Shasta daisy

i planted three shasta daisy plants last year and they all flowered. This year two have vanished and the third has put up leaves, which have been thoroughly chewed by something! We do not suffer from slugs although there may be a few and I have plants far more to a slugs liking than these, so what has happened?

So many of the daisy family are attractive to slugs and snails when the first shoots emerge. Echinacea, rudbeckia, the same often happens. All it needs is one fat snail on one mild damp night.

Thank you H-C. In that case it was probably a snail! Those we do have, although not many that I've seen!
