Planting photinias in containers

i am about to plant photinias in large containers and would like some advice about drainage.  Should we make holes in the bottom and would it be a good idea to put stones or other medium in the bottom.

Yes and yes.  I would also cover the stones or gravel at the bottom with a layer of weed membrane or woven landscaping fabric.  That will prevent the gaps between the stones being filled with fine soil over time and eventually reducing the drainage.  Make the holes at least 10mm in diameter and make plenty of them. image

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Thank you very much for answering my problem.  Good tip about the weed membrane. Thanks
