Sweet peas

Growing sweet peas to plant out. Got some lovely rich soil and a strong trellis for them but I'm receiving conflicting advice on whether to pinch out the tops. I want them to grow up the trellis to a good height but I also want them to have as many flowers as possible. What do I do? They are currently in the cold frame but presume I will need to plant them out soon.

Thanks.

I pinch min out, they stop them getting leggy and develop strong plants that will grow and flower the better for it, hope that helps but its all opinion image

I always pinch mine out - makes them branch out so you get three stems to grow up instead of one.  I think the advice to not pinch out is if you are growing show blooms, when you want all the energy concentrated in the one stem for the biggest, showiest flowers possible (but not very many of them image)

  • That's great, thanks guys. I can see the sense in what you say. Tomorrow they will all be pinched!!
