Planting seeds and bark chippings

Can you plant seeds under a mulch of woodchippings or won't they come up?

Hi Maylane. It is probably not a good idea to plant them under woodchippings as they would be unlikely to germinate. People usually put a mulch of wood chippings down to suppress weeds and as wood chippings cannot tell the difference between weeds and desirable plants they will just suppress the desirable plants as well. If you can, sow them in pots and once they get to a decent size, plant them into the garden but keep the mulch clear of their stems.
