pruning espalier apples

Our espalier apple trees did not get their autumn prune last year as my husband was in hospital for several weeks and died in November.  As a result there are long side shoots, some of which overhang the lawn and will have to be cut back as they impede mowing.  Is it too late to reduce the others?  There are buds near the top which are opening.

    It'll make little difference now, so you can remove some of the leggier ones, or, as should be done, wait until mid- summer, Late July time, and shorten back the long shoots then.

    I decided to reduce them a bit as they looked wrong.  Maybe I'll get fewer apples but how many can one person eat?
