Bringing on dahlias

RobmarstonRobmarston Posts: 335

Dear all,  I started off some dahlias towards the end of February indoors (early, I know but I want a long season!).  They are near, but not on a windowsill.  They have sprouted nicely with one having a shoot of a foot long although the others are shorter.

I was wondering if it would be safe to move them into my greenhouse now?  It's a cold greenhouse but gets more light.  Would I need to move them over slowly or would they be fine if I just took them over?  Last week I started off a load of divided tubers in the greenhouse but they've always been there.

  • It should be fine I have around 60 tubers in my cold greenhouse and a few are sprouting now and they are doing fine. plus I live on border of England/Scotland so it's not exactly that warm here.

60?  Actually I might have that many. They don't half multiply, don't they!

  • Yeah it's so easy to get more each year. they are a plant u can't have too many of and their are so many interesting types.

Mine are in a polytunnel and I pot them up as they start to shoot. Mercifully they spread themselves out over time.

I had a " cull " last year and got rid of over 100. image

I actually counted the dahlias I've potted up in the greenhouse and it came to 50. However I still  have quite a few in the shed waiting to be divided and potted. I bought two more types this but I have to be careful as I'm running out of room. I can  culling although I try to give mine away if I can.  Do you have any favourites Dan?

You know what it's like. Over the years, you split and split and before you know it , it one plant you bought becomes about 10.

I bought six this year and thought I was doing well. I can see I'm a rank Beginner in the dahlia stakes!
