Help with planting neighbour's bed

AnniDAnniD Posts: 12,165

My neighbour has asked my husband & I to plant up a new raised flower bed for him. It was built last autumn, is south facing, about 10 feet square. He has had some box balls planted to give him some greenery over winter, but that is all. Although I have some ideas about plants, I'd appreciate any ideas you have. I'm trying to plan for year round interest and also the fact that he is not a keen gardener and not in the first flush of youth ! This is in the front garden near the front door so will be in full view.

If your neighbour doesn't mind some spraying, mini-roses bloom for a long time, provided that I guesses right and plants no taller than the boxes are wanted. Some bulbs here and there can provide seasonal interest without much care, and a -very- few grasses can extend the interest into winter.

Cyclamen coum are my new favourite plant for winter colour. I think they're stunning.

I think I'd go for a planting plan something like the one shown here (scroll down)

As it's a US site the varieties named may not be available here, but there will be plenty similar available to you.

There shouldn't be much maintenance other than trimming back after flowering, and they should be happy in a south facing site without needing watering.
