They are subject to phytophora infection which this looks like. Cut out all the dead bits. They can recover, mine have

So its an Aucuba. This explains why I couldn't track down an image to help explain the problem with my laurel shrub! I'll take your advice and hopefully it will pick up and flourish this summer.
