Where to buy

helen378helen378 Posts: 23

Hi I've started to plan what to put in my garden this year and like the look of the schizanthus  (poor man's orchid) does anyone know when they appear in garden centres or even online to buy ready to plant?

  • You could buy a packet of seeds and start now! They are annuals and very easy to grow, but can't go outside till after the frosts.

  • Thank you for the replys but I don't have space, equipment  to grow from seeds. Plus all the seeds I've ever planted never grew.

Probably not that common as small plants in GCs, so if you can't, or don't want to, grow from seed, a quick online search will probably find some suppliers of plants or plugs etc. image

I'd stick with a reputable, known supplier though - there will be lots of dodgy outlets on eBay and the like, so always take care if buying online.

You say you've had no success with seeds in the past. If you want to try doing some again, I'm sure you'll get plenty of help here if you describe the issues you've had. image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • hi Helen,

I bought some of these off ebay:

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SCHIZANTHUS-ANGEL-WINGS-MIX-1-GRAM-APPROX-1500-SEEDS-POOR-MANS-ORCHID-/281938453570

so can confirm that they are good. Very easy to sow - very fast germination on a heat mat at 20C. I think you could start them quite easily on an indoor window sill.

If you are near South Glos you can have some of mine! Done my normal trick of sowing too thickly - they are dust-like seeds.
