Cutting back roses

Hi all,

Normally I would have trimmed back my roses last year but unfortunately due to some family problems, I never had the time to get it done.

At the moment some have grown pretty tall and was wondering if I've missed the boat on cutting them back.

Many thanks

No, still time to prune them.

Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.
  • Ok thanks, I'll try and get out next weekend and get it done, was worried that they might have started shooting out already as some do appear to have leaves on

  • I was always told to get my rose pruning done before Easter.  There are shoots now, but if you cut the bush back to where you can see a shoot pushing through in the direction you want the 'branch' to be, then cut above that shoot at an angle that the water does not run into the new shoot.

The more you cut roses, the more they love it. Do feed them though!

  • Ok thanks. My neighbours have cut all theirs back to the floor but I don't think I can go that low. Normally doing it at the end of the year but unfortunately family illness had different plans so garden had to take back step
