Bank Cover Plant ID

I have a steep bank which doesn't get a great deal of light but has a nice matted covering of a plant that I'm not familiar with. It is evergreen and looks a little like a 'sedge'. I've cleared some more of the bank and would like to cover this area with the same plant.

Any ideas folks?....I'll probably find out it's a weed!  image

  • It's a moss, possibly Polytrichastrum formosum (Bank Haircap). Not sure how you would encourage it.

See, I knew it would be a weed! ?

Would it make sense to take a 'turf' section of this moss and relocate it to the new position? Is it likely to 'take'?

    Thanks

  • You could perhaps use a penknife to dig out little squares to transplant. These have rhizoids but not true roots like a flowering plant so you shouldn't need a huge amount of soil with each bit. I don't know how quickly it would spread.

I suspect it probably does better in quite a lot of shade where other plants won't grow so well and outcompete it, so clearing too much probably won't suit it.
