Norwegian Spruce Topiary

I am looking to trim/train a small Norwegian Spruce into a ball, or more dense version of a classic Christmas tree shape. The tree is currently around 1.2m tall.

Does anyone have some tips or advice on this please?

I don't want to torture the poor thing, but I also don't want it growing to 40m tall. 

How tolerant to tampering are they, and where do I start?

Any tips much appreciated.
