THE PROBLEM WAS PROBABLY THE WEATHER.

EITHER IT WAS TOO COLD FOR BEES TO FLY DURING THE TREE'S FLOWERING PERIOD AND SO THE FLOWERS WEREN'T FERTILISED OR THE FLOWERS WERE FERTILISED BUT THEY GOT FROSTED SHORTLY AFTERWARDS, PROBABLY OVERNIGHT.

WHERE DO YOU LIVE?  DOES YOUR AREA GET LATE FROSTS?

I LIVE IN THE PEAK DISTRICT AND HAVE GOOD CROPS OF VICTORIA PLUM BUT POOR ONES OF CONFERENCE PEAR AS THE PEAR FLOWERS EARLIER IN THE YEAR AND SUFFERS FROM THE TWO PROBLEMS I MENTION ABOVE.

I DID HAVE A WILLIAMS PEAR, WHICH FLOWERED AND FRUITED WELL, BUT UNFORTUNATELY THE NURSERY THAT SUPPLIED IT TO ME HAD NOT APPRECIATED THAT WILLIAMS PEARS NEED DOUBLE GRAFTED ROOTSTOCKS AND THE TREE SNAPPED OFF AT THE GRAFT POINT WHILE IT WAS QUITE YOUNG.

Apophthegm -  a big word for a small thought.
If you live in Derbyshire, as I do.
