Roses for Rose Arch

Sandra100Sandra100 Posts: 130

Hello!

I'm about to plant a rose arch.

It's a south facing aspect, with clay soil.  Tends to get a bit windy.

Would love a heavily fragranced rose, or two!!

Any advice on the best roses to choose would be much appreciated.

Anticipating buying them bare root soon.

Thanks

Sandra.

    WHICH COLOUR OR COLOURS?

I'd prefer something pinkyish if possible, or cream?

But actually if a yellowish rose fit the bill a bit better then would be happy with that!

David Austin do repeat flowering rambling roses which would be easy to twine round an arch.  They have Malvern Hills - soft yellow, Lady of the lake - soft pink and others.   Have a look on their website.

David Austin rose The Generous Gardener is a pale coloured rose with good scent. Also, climbing Arthur Bell. The flowers are an intense yellow but they get paler as the flower ages and the perfume is gorgeous.

I had a beautiful Generous Gardener in my last garden.  It was very strong and vigorous and covered 3 panels of trellis.  I wouldn't have thought it supple enough for training on an arch.

I WOULD AGREE THAT THE GENEROUS GARDENER IS A BIG, TALL, UPRIGHT BUSH RATHER THAN A CLIMBER.

HOW ABOUT CONSTANCE SPRY OR COMPASSION?

My GG was definitely a climber but too stiff and strong for a rose arch which needs more flexible stems so you can wind them about diagonally and horizontally to encourage more blooms.

Thanks very much for all your replies.

I'm in the process of researching the names you've given me.

Some of them seem to be suitable for shade, so not for me as it's a very sunny spot.

    Once again, many thanks

    Sandra.

DON'T BE PUT OFF BY THE REFERENCE TO THEM BEING SUITABLE FOR SHADE.

ROSES ORIGINATED IN HOT SUNNY COUNTRIES SUCH AS IRAN. SAYING THAT THEY ARE SUITABLE FOR SHADE IS A WAY OF SAYING THAT THEY ARE UNUSUALLY TOLERANT OF SOMETHING THAT THEY DO NOT NORMALLY LIKE.

VERY FEW ROSES SUFFER FROM BEING IN THE SUN.
