What direction are we looking in the picture? North, East, South, West.  It will make a difference.

  • Looks an nice open site.  Try to use angles to create an impression that the garden is larger than it is.  Simple designs work better in smaller gardens too.  Is that an ash in the corner? Much as I like ash trees, that's far too close to the fence and it'll get HUGE! Not only will it break the fence but you won't be able to get to the fence to maintain it.

Exactly how big is garden, width and length, yup facing? what soil type.

  • Garden is facing west.

As you look out the French doors we have a quite road to our left and obviously neighbours to our right and behind.

    Will get measurements tommorrow.

As for the tree I have no idea on plants :) I'm very new to this but want to do it right which is why I'm here, thanks

Hi Mitch, is this roughly the whole of your garden as in the pic? What type of garden are you wishing? Modern, cottage, wild, easy maintainable? Entertaining?

Also if you take close up pic of tree we may be able to name it for you ?

can we have measurements, in "old" money please feet and inches, is the patio staying?  You do realise we are going to bombard you on here because we have soooh many different styles of gardening!!

Yes, you are correct Chloe, (our place is 50 years old, Hubby dug out side border last year, clay which flooded, and there were enough bricks and rubble underneath to make another building) I also asked for soil test before, then we can really get our combined creative juices going, haha.

  • We are making the front drive wide enougj for 2 cars.

in the back we want some sort of patio at the top (closest to the house) as it gets the sun the longest.

want something quite low maintenlance and good for entertaining bbq's ect.

the garden slops off quite abit which is why I was thinking of splitting it into 2 levels

will get measurements at the weekend

    Hi Mitch

apologies for late reply, frozen iPad problems!

thank you for all the pics and looks like you have a nice blank canvas to work with image

Re patio would it be totally new or extension to existing one? Would you then lose the small slab patio bit?

If you wish low maintenance i would go for ever green plants/shrubs and then maybe big pots of herbs and spices to use on your BBQs and entertaining.  I would go for small selection of plants and repeat throughout your beds image
