For what?
for the fag ends of the aristocracy.

What for? Trees? Shrubs? Bulbs? Perennials? Veg?

Whereabouts are you? What are your soil conditions and temperatures? What sort/ style of garden are you after?
Theres not a lot that can be planted at the moment other than bare rooted trees, and those only if the soil isn't frozen and has been well prepared.
January is a time for browsing the catalogues, looking at the bare bones of your garden and making plans.
Do you have a Propagator? That will allow you to get an early start in the spring, but only if you have a greenhouse or similar to move your seedlings on to once they've been pricked out.
Do you have to have an electric proper gator ?
That depends on what you want to grow - some plants need warmer temperatures to ensure germination. Others will germinate quite happily in cooler temperatures, and others need to be outside in the cold. My Anthriscus sylvestris 'Ravenswing' seeds gathered last autumn, sown immediately and left outside have germinated this week.
