This set itself in a pot and I'm wondering what it could be. I did think blackthorn initially but not sure the leaves are right. PS - picture taken in the dark.

can't see too clearly but has the look of a willow
Thank you nut I might find a place for it in the garden if it doesn't get too big.
it will get too big if it's a willow Fishy. Take a daylight pic tomorrow, It might not be.
Will do nut
Yes, a willow; not a distinguished one. You may regret it if you nurture it!
From here it looks like Salix caprea - Goat Willow - one of the first scrubby trees to colonise neglected open land, marsh, tundra etc and turn it into scrub ............ so unless you have a vast acreage pull it out or you'll regret it
Are you saying my garden is neglected Dove? Seriously though, many thanks to all. I shall pull it out but not before some daylight pics...
It will only be neglected if you neglect to pull out every self-sown goat willow that pops up Fishy
Photo's a bit blurry - maybe you've got the freezing fog that we're shrouded in?
Take a look here - do these look like what you've got? http://www.alamy.com/stock-photo-pussy-willow-goat-willow-great-sallow-salix-caprea-seedling-on-a-pavement-76125438.html
That looks alarmingly like what I have here Dove, especially the reddish stems.
