Clematis

Some of my established clematis have turned brown, with leaves dropping off, and my Montana Rubens leaves are green but turning yellow and starting to drop off, is this winter reaction normal?

    In a word - yes :)

  • Thanks Pete8 & Muddle up for reassuring me - it is my first winter with the Montana and I thought it was growing so well but now this leaf dropping has stalled me. In fact the plant stopped growing about 3 or 4 weeks ago - I guess once the temperature dropped below 10 at night.  The other 3 clematis have turned brown and do look a bit dead, but as you say it is all part of the winter process - roll on Spring time!

My Rebecca clematis looks well-manky and covered in dead leaves - it's also got new buds breaking at the same time... it'll learn

  • I must admit that I didn't notice any new buds on any of mine, I will take a closer look next time I am passing them. However my roses are forming new buds and small fresh leaves, I am half way through giving them a winter prune, although there are still some rose flowers on a few of them
