Could anyone tell me what these are please?

Goldfinches like the seeds in them, but they scatter everywhere. Once you have them, you always have them.
The nicest thing is that they pop up in unexpected places, often far better places than I might have chosen to put them. Vicious spines if you try to pull them up though.
