growing a potato vine in a pot

graigrai Posts: 64

I'm trying to screen off my balcony with a potato vine (Solanum crispum 'Glasnevin')

does anyone know how big a pot it would need to grow healthy and make a 4 meter screen of privacy?

thanks

It's going to grow very big so,a 30in pot depth about the same. You will have to water it a lot in the summer.image

  • I planted one of these against my south west facing wall in spring. It was only 1 foot and has grown almost to 6 foot this year!! I think it would be too vigorous for a pot. I wish i had planted the white one now but i do like the flowers. I heard the white one is a bit less of a thug.

thanks - I need a thug to screen off my balcony and hide my neighbours!

  • I grew one in a 25cm wide, 40cm deep, pot for about 3 years and it did very well and flowered profusely.  Since planting it in the ground it has produced far more growth and had fewer flowers, so I think you'll be ok for a few years at least.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

    thanks Bob

can't WAIT till the spring and watch it slowly grow and make my balcony more and more private as the weeks go on
