acers

I have a large acer in a pot(were I live everything has to be in pots,site owners rules)the pot is a large one about 3feet high and 2feet wide,my question is now all the foliage has fallen of do I need to feed it and does it need pruning at all if so when should it be done.hope somebody can help thanks in anticipation,michael.

    Hi Michael - I have many Acers in pots. I favour leaving them alone and then topping up the compost plus a bit of feed in spring If you 'need' to prune - do this once dormant,in deep winter, and consider 'pot-feet' to help drainage over winter as they hate poor drainage. Hope the Autumn colours were pleasing ??

  • Great advice there from AuntyRach, I'd add that it is really advisable not to prune them at all as they're particularly prone to horrible fungal diseases from cuts in the stem. If you consider that they can be grown as bonsais, they're not going to have a problem with a large pot. For the most part, if they're happy, you just think how lucky you are and let well enough alone (IMHO) image
