What do I do with this monster?!

we inherited this honeysuckle with the house. It's a bit of a monster now. And very woody underneath. Will it come back and cover the wall again nicely if I essentially cut it right to the base? Right now it just resembles a messy small tree  and the left side of it seems to be dying away after producing berries

Generally speaking Lonicera will come back strongly after a severe trimming. Ours did in any case and 12 months on is nearly as big again.

It was cut back to bare stems at a height where we could tie them in to the fence. So say four to five feet of bare stem left.

  • Ok great, thanks!

  • I agree with Berghill, having tackled a similar monster this year myself. It was a hell of a job, and it'll look like you've killed it, but with a good feed, water and mulch it'll start growing again before you're back in the house!
