Hi wills, the hole should be slightly bigger than the pot and plant it the same depth as in the pot.I wouldn't put a lot of compost in, use it as a mulch.
Hi Dove multi purpose compost manure my garden was built on an old car park and I dug it down pretty deep and filled it with the above and every season I give it a top up.
As you're probably finding, multi purpose compost breaks down pretty quickly and becomes quite insubstantial - I would add as much good topsoil as you can - you can get it in bags from the garden centre or Homebase etc - roses need something a bit more like real soil than just compost and manure.
I agree with Logan about the size of the hole.
Paul Noel is a pretty rose with a lovely scent - it can grow quite big so be prepared to give it a good support structure to clamber up or over.

Your right Dove I've been adding manure to the compost I will go out and get topsoil everything I've read on the net states that the planting hole should be twice the size of the roots and incorporate compost and bonemeal to the planting hole is this not the case??
Current thinking is that when planting a shrub or tree it is better not to prepare too large a hole, as this doesn't give the plant something firm to root into and consequently the shrub may be unstable and rock, causing water to settle around the roots and then freeze in the winter and cause damage.

U have me totally confused now verdun ha I will wait till Monday and phone David Austin and seek there advice I am in a similar position pink roses for my other half sentimental reasons so I am trying to get it right for her
Verdun I suggested adding topsoil as Wills said that the bed he's planting the rose in was built 'on an old car park' and he has added MPC and manure - from that I understood that there was little or no soil in the bed. Perhaps I've misunderstood.
