Green manure

What green manure seeds can I sow at this late stage to be effective over this winter? I have been hampered by an operation and will be unable to do any thing for a couple of weeks yet. I had read that mustard seed is excellent, but the seed companies say to sow by September. Is this vital? Is there a suitable alternative for me?

Depending where you are in the country Ann, we are having a comparatively mild spell at the moment so I personally would risk it. Phacelia is another green manure that could be used.

I have just spread some red clover seeds on the empty patches in my borders. It is supposed to be good for our sandy soil.

I am rather late sowing this but nothing ventured nothing gained.  .

I came very near to accidentally throwing away this packet with the seeds in it so I better do something with them.

    I am in South Cheshire

  • Thank you for the suggestions. I am in Suffolk, where it is quite mild and the soil is clay on chalk in general
