Clematis gift

iceice Posts: 332

Need some advice. Been given Clematis 'Guiding Promise™ Evipo053 as a gift in 9cm pot. Weather here has started to run. What's best for this, pot up into bigger pot. Plant out directly or something else.

Want it to survive!

Assuming it's filling that pot quite well, I'd pot it on into a deep pot, the proper clematis ones if you can, but a 6 or 7 inch standard one will do if you don't have that.  That will let it develop a good root system for next year. Just keep it in a sheltered spot over winter.

Yes, pot it on and plant it a bit deeper than it was so it grows extra shoots as it develops.  I would then keep it in a sheltered spot over winter.   I would then pot on again next spring and keep growing it on and potting it on until it's big enough  to cope with life outside in the border as clems can take  while to establish a good root system.
