I have a catnip plant i started from seed in a pot, but my cat does not care about it. But is it the plant/leaves it self or is it the flowers that the cats reacts to?????
Not all cats are attracted to catnip - I've had a lot of cats and only one of them reacted to catnip, whereas my son's cat and both of my daughter's cats absolutely love it. Apparently only about 50% have the genes that cause the reaction.
Leaves mostly but if they really like it, then any part they can roll on
Ours could take it or leave it. It has a small affect. She likes to smell it and then tends to sneeze a few times but then walks off not too bothered and leaves it for the bees
Like a lot of things, a but of exaggeration has built up. Cats like all sorts of plants that are in a nice sunny warm spot. Catmint is grown in such places...hence cats come a calling! Simple!
Actually with some cats and some nepetas there is a really strong reaction. My neighbour has (had) 3 different varieties of nepeta and one cat. He went completely loopy for one of the 3 varieties and was entirely 'meh' about the other two. They had to get rid of the one because he was rolling in it constantly and then wandering around in a complete daze.
I think un-neutered males are far more reactive to it, so if you have females or males that have been snipped and/or one of the 'meh' varieties of catnip, you'd be utterly astonished to see just how bonkers the ones that are affected can become.
“Light thinks it travels faster than anything but it is wrong. No matter how fast light travels, it finds the darkness has always got there first”
My old black tom called Pepper used to go crazy for it. If I held a leaf in my hand for him, he was so keen he'd even try and eat it and didn't care if he got my fingers too! I often wondered if that's how it got the name catnip!
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
I have grown cat nip for my two cats for years and also cover it with an old wire hanging basket to stop them chewing it to death in spring. They enjoy it summer, it seems to act as a stimulant to them and they roll around with enthusiasm. I like it's soft blue pillowy effect in a small border too!

Maybe thats why ge wont react, he is already neutered. I know the reason cats react to it is because the smell smells like a (female?) Cats "territory marketing scent"?

Not so different to their human equivalents and alcohol then!

My cats love catnip!
Another thing they go crazy for is Dianthus (any species).
They try to eat the leaves!
I USED TO HAVE A CAT THAT WENT WEAK AT THE KNEES FOR CHICKEN TIKKA MASALA FROM THE RAJ TAKEAWAY DOWN THE ROAD.
WOULDN'T EVEN SNIFF ANY OTHER TYPE OF CURRY OR ANY OTHER MAKE OF CHICKEN TIKKA MASALA.
FUNNY LOT, CATS.
If you live in Derbyshire, as I do.
