Tulips in pots

just one more question for now! Sorry,

i have some empty pots and im thinking of planting some tulips along with pansys probally so my questions are

how deep in the pot do the bulbs go?

Can i plant them up now and leave them outside all winter?

if i plant pansys on top of the tulips will they push there way through?

Thank you

Three times the depth  of the bulb for planting, but it's less important in pots. For tulips, that's about five or six inches of soil above the bulb. You can plant more densely in a pot than in the ground too.

  • Monty Don did a bit about planting bulbs in pots a couple of weeks ago. I bet it's available on iPlayer. :D

    It's pretty straightforward....

Cover the drainage hole with crocks or similar, put some decent compost in your chosen pot, leaving approximately 6 or 7 inches for filling to the finished level. Put bulbs in, cover with more compost. Poke a few pansies in if that's what you want, or cover with gravel. Water.  Job done. image

Hello , I am going to put tulips for the first time in pots as well , however , I will need to cover with chicken wire to stop Squirrel digging them up image

I don't cover my tulips GWRS - the squirrels don't dig down that deep.

Crocus or the little sphaerocephalon alliums are another matter entirely....image
