Id and advice please

can you id this please and can i hack it back hard? Do you think its effecting this wisterIa? And if so what should i do about it? Thank youimageimage

  • The climber is a Wisteria, probably floribunda.

The shrub looks like a Hebe, or at a pinch Cistus. You can cut these back but not beyond the parts where there are still some leaves or you end up with brown twigs. Neither of these is remotely capable of affecting the Wisteria.

  • The shrub is cistus, probably c. purpureus. It Iooks in nice condition and would normally be pruned in mid summer after the first flush of flowers. Generally they don't need much attention. It won't be affecting the wisteria, it's too shallow rooted and thrives in poor soils in its native habitat (Mediterranean).

You can't hard prune Cistus, they really don't like it and will more often than not die. HC's advice is spot on.

  • Thank you all for the advice
