Please help me identify this beautiful tree

KatGKatG Posts: 37

Hi I spotted this beautiful tree today in a pot outside a shop in Kilkenny Ireland. Lovely pink/red bark with a sheen and brought green leaves. If anyone can identify it I'd be really grateful.  Thanks, Katherine

    ARBUTUS UNEDO?

Apophthegm -  a big word for a small thought.
If you live in Derbyshire, as I do.

Thanks pansyface but I don't think it's an evergreen... The leaves are also a brighter lighter green.. Any other ideas?

    Leaves look like hornbeam

  • Bark with a bright red sheen makes me think of Prunus serrula, Tibetan Cherry, but that is definitely deciduous.

Thanks all. Prunus Serrula - I don't think it blossoms and the leaf shape looks different to me??

Other suggestions Sorbus aria Aurea or Alnus Incana Aurea Tree? What do you think?

  • A bit hard to get a sense of the size of the leaves Kat--can you give us an indication? It looks like an Alnus to me. I hesitate to say anything about the colour because of the time of year.
