I brought a bare root peony (Sarah Bernhadt) in late spring on a punt becuase it was reduced to £2; i planted it and it threw up leaves and looks healthy now. However picky me has decided it isnt in the right place so i dug it up today and moved it but i saw these shoots that were buried quite deep which having read isnt good for flowering. Have i done the right thing to plant it so the shoot tips are above ground level? or do they need to be below but not so deep?

Looks fine to me. Good drainage and good light are the most important things for it now. Looks nice and healthy and happy   image

Phew, thanks fairygirl. should it be even growing these new shoots now? What with impending winter looming

It may be because of it being a bare root and possibly not being in the best conditions till you 'rescued' it. I think it'll be fine. image

If it produces any new growth, that will die back anyway as the plant becomes dormant. I'm sure it'll come away again in spring at the usual time. I think the topsy turvy weather this year has created a few odd things too. Plants usually sort themselves out quite well .

mine has these too M Fent, over the two years i've had it planted these shoots were below the soil, i think it's where i throw discarded compost and gradually the soil level has got higher, so i scraped it away and uncovered these shoots, now i am wondering whether i should dig it up and raise the level of the plant  so these shoots are at ground level (the surronding soil is maybe 2inches higher, would i undo the year 1,2,3 rule by disturbing it or not if i wait til winter to do it?

i've cut the foliage off today as it had badly affected leaf blotch

i have had mine planted 3 yrs next spring, 1st yr roots,2nd yr shoots, 3rd year flowers, so the saying goes, i had one beautiful flower this year, hoping for more next year.

well..... it was labelled correctly at the garden centre & i had it id'd on here & the thought was it is a 'shirley temple'? it has a tiny pink edge to some of the petals like someone has edged the petals with a felt pen
