Growing lavender from seed

Has anyone done this with success? The seed heads on our lavender plants seem to be ready to harvest so should I sow the collected seed now or in the Spring?

Thanks for sharing your experiences Tetley and nutcutlet - I will collect some tomorrow (if dry) and store until early Spring. The picture was taken a few months ago, the flowers have finished now but I left a few to dry on the plant so will be removed tomorrow.
