I was wondering again
I noticed an ant farm on a dead cosmos - too far down the garden to water
All of the aphids were still lined up on the stems. Why didn't the ants move off elsewhere?
Do the ants glue them to their posts?
In London. Keen but lazy.

the ants are the guards and the greenfly the prisoners, the ants feed off of the sticky coating on the aphids, sometimes biting their little wings off so they can't escape, aphids feed off the plant, produce the sticky stuff on their bodies and this feeds the ants
The bitten off wings will have accounted for it maybe. Good job ants are ant-sized or we'd really be in trouble
i'm keeping my biscuits in the safe
