Allium collection from GW

Obviously 100 alliums for just postage was always going to be a gamble - wondered if anyone had bought these before and had success?

I'm going off a comparison of sizes of the Mount Everest vs some I bought from a separate supplier (Pic below).  How long do you think it would take to get to a similar size and will the flowering suffer until it does reach the same size?

  • I have also just received mine,s o cannot answer your question, have tried allium bulbs before, they never came up, so I treated myself to a few already in flower last year the sphaerocephalon, but they were expensive, I see some of the larger varieties of bulb were £9.99 per bulb, so lets plant them and hope for the best!

I acquired the allium collection a couple of years ago and had mixed results with some of the bulbs doing well and others disappearing completely. On the plus side it was a good way to get an idea of which alliums looked good in the garden and the following year I bought a couple of varieties from another supplier. With the free bulbs you get a lot of the cheapest varieties and they aren't necessarily all that impressive.

  • Course, you dont know whether its the slugs or whatever scoffing the bulbs, or the wet weather rotting them, or they could just be rubbish bulbs!!!

Oh great - I spent ages last week preparing beds for and planting the alliums, & this morning I've been planning what to do with the 200 spring bulbs that have just arrived....

  • There was a similar deal a year or so back, almost all of mine grew. I actually get a few pop up no where near where I planted them too!

  • Ok maybe they won't be too bad.  Like I said before, gamble worth taking for the price.  I'll just have to see how the 'quarter sized' bulbs will grow :-)

i bought really good sized allium bulbs, mount everest (white) & gladiator (purple) from lidl on sunday, these are the 1m tall varieties they are £1.69 for two large bulbs (per pack) or two packs for £3. , i bought 16 packs lol

I have put a handful of gravel underneath each bulb so hopefully they won't rot in the ground over winter

  • I bought the GW allium offer a year or two back. We had about a dozen smaller alliums in flower and three of these lovelyimagegigantium - but the offer cost us near on £18.00 - so no, certainly not worth it for us.

  • Wow Sanjy67 that's a good deal.  Was it a one-off or 'standard' prices?  I might need to hunt out a Lidl....

  • Well the third Lidl I found had loads left.  Very good sized bulbs - super happy.  Good info Sanjy67 ??.
