I've just noticed this plant thriving in the garden in my new house. Anyone know what it is?

Thank you - so can I assume the orange fruit is ripe (and edible!) ?

They are edible when ripe, but in my experience they're not really very tasty and I don't bother.
You're right, the taste is recognisable but it hasn't the special flavour of P. edulis which I remember from our garden in New Zealand. Dad wouldn't let us pick the fruit. 'Wait 'til they've fallen' he said. He was so right.

Thank you all :-)
