Hello all, just wondering if anyone knows what this is a branch from? The leaves on this branch are young so only about 8inches, but the larger branches had leaves around 20inches long. Any ideas? Many thanks
Looking at the Woodland website after both suggestions, it's definitely not Ash. The leaves are alternate and deeply serrated. But thanks for replying Bright star. I think I agree with you Hosta as the Woodland website description virtually matches the description I gave originally for the leaves! The tree isn't in my garden. The original trunk was about 2ft across but someone has cut that down to about 3ft high a long time ago (it's covered in ivy) and these new branches are growing straight up from the original trunk with only the weight of the enormous leaves causing them to hang down a bit. It looks quite 'jungly'. It's obviously been poorly treated and I wanted to know what it was so that I could tell the owner and hopefully she can treat it better in the future. Many thanks guys
In case anyone is interested the website address is woodlands.co.uk. Under each tree it has a description with photos. I've not come across the website before but the species descriptions seem quite useful

Should there be a picture jandh?
Oh god, what an idiot! So sorry...
The leaves have deep vein marks and they're particularly long. The tree looks almost tropical but I bet it's something really boring
Looks like an ash tree, if it is, cherish it!
It's not ash.
Looks like Sweet Chestnut to me. Castanea Sativa
I think so too Hosta
In the sticks near Peterborough
