Fan shaped Day Lilly Plants
About 4 years ago we were give three fan shaped Day Lilly plants, big mistake was i planted them, they have spread to about 10 plants now. we want to get rid of them. digging up is difficult as there are plants / bulbs around them we don't want to disturb.I may be able to dig a few small day lilly plants out but the large plants are not easy. is there a weed killer that will kill them off completely. I don't want them spreading any more, they never flower and are a real nuisance. Any help or advice appreciate.... Thanks ( the novice gardener )

You won't be able to use a weed killer because of the other plants, you will have to try and dig them up.What sort of bulbs have you got?
They are hardto difg out but that's what has to happen. I've got a big lump of rarely flowering daylily to exterminate. I'll wait til the rains start and the ground softens. You can replant the bulbs and the rest of the plants, they won't mind.

Bulbs are iris, gladiola, allium, some unknown shrubs, and a red hot poker plant. We are going to lift the gladiola and reposition them, also maybe the allium to thin them out a bit. Iris are OK where they, plus they have all but disappeared now. The newer small lily plants come up fairly easy, but there are some much more established and are very difficult to lift.
I reckon day lilies need lifting at least every 3 years to keep them flowering or their roots get congested and they just make leaves.
Water well, leave for an hour then dig up as much as you can. Split the clumps carefully so you can extract what you want to keep and bin the bits you don't. Rinsing the roots in a bucket of water helps you see what's what as well as limiting damage to the treasures.

We had heavy rain all day yesterday, so I will have a go at digging the bigger ones out today, don't want to replant them at all, when they did flower they looked good, but there spreading everywhere which is what we don't want. I think in future if someone offers me plants I'll do some research on them first.
Thanks to everyone for help and advice.
good idea Denwyn, always beware of a large clump of anything being offered for free.
I dug up and chucked (or gave away
) most of my day lilies a couple of years ago.

You know you can eat them?
The flowers - which the OP isn't getting.

Picky
will I get lynched if I say day-lilies are hugely over-rated.
