Hi
When is the best time to multiply my Dahlias by cuttings??
I think i have the method but not sure when to do for next year....
R
Start the tubers into growth in February, and take the first shoots off as cuttings.
Cant i take cuttings from mature plants rather than the tubers???
No, shoots higher up are hollow and will not root.
If you have a big cluster tuber, they sometimes split. Each lobe or potato shaped bit has to have a growing point still attached.
Thats digging up and dividing.
I want to take a cutting from my plant??
As fidget says, you can take cuttings from the first shoots that emerge in Spring, but not from mature plants, as the stems become hollow.
ok, got it, thanks...
If you are leaving them in the soil over winter, you have to beat the slugs to the first shoots. To force them for cuttings, they need a bit of warmth, somewhere under glass, so you will need to dig them up anyway.
