Wot is it?

Hi, I was digging over my recently vacated onion bed today and found this, any ideas? I don't think it had roots or any shoots attached, but guess they could have been separated by the digging. It wasn't put there by us as the beds are relatively new raised beds. We do have squirrels but seems to big for them to have put it there. It's rock solid, almost like the outer green casing of a conker, it has no spikes tho? Any suggestions?

It looks a little bit like a quince but I am not too sure.

It's a walnut. If you break it open, the fleshy bit comes off to reveal the walnut you know inside. The shell may not be fully hardened yet. Planted by a squirrel probably.

  • Yes, definitely a walnut.  image

  • Thanks all! Is it plantable in its current state?

  • Yes, that's how nature does it image  You'll have to watch out that a squirrel doesn't come along and dig it up image

  • Its now in a pot surrounded by my finest potting mix well away from prying squirrel eyes, would be lovely to grow a walnut tree from scratch. image
