It looks very much like a hawthorn to me. Has it got spines?

  • It's very narrow...Do you mean spikes? If so I am not sure if it has spikes, I will just go and check. image

  • Not me.  Ok me too.

  • Thank you all. Ladybird no it doesn't have spikes on it. Is this a miniature version? Do you think it was planted or came by itself? I do like it somewhat, it isn't out of control but I am debating whether to remove it as I want to plant a honeysuckle. Am struggling for space in the flowerbed...would you remove this?

How big is your garden and how interested are you in wildlife and native plants?

    I wouldn't be without hawthorn

  • It's quite big Nutcutlet but more lawn and narrower flower beds. Sorry I don't know dimensions off hand. I would like to have native plants.  I have just been given 6 cowslips from a neighbour because I really like them! Is Hawthorn a native plant? I always thought this flowered but this year it didn't...is it a good plant to have in the garden for wildlife?

yes, hawthorn is a native plant. It does flower but may have off years, blackbirds, fieldfares like the berries. It doesn't get enormous nd can be cut back any time. Did you cut it back last year, that may be where the flowers went.

Garden style and content is very personal. I love the natives and I don't kill things. I don't have a pest problem, I have a balance. My garden is not neat but it's not a shambles.
