Can i chop/move a large cotinus??

I have a very large and mature smoke tree/ cotinus which is too big for the position its in.

im wondering if i can chop it right back into the wood as to start it again?

It also seems to have 3 main trunks each of which look like they could have there own root system so could i split it into 3 which would also reduce the size

any thoughts would be great thank you

you can cut them right back to base, in spring, to start again. Some people do that every year for the foliage.

As nutcutlet says, cutting back in spring results in larger leaves and contains the height and spread.

Yes as it can be chopped and doesnt like being moved ill try keeping it where it is and giving it a chop,

should i chop it right down to the stump or leave a few inches and if so are there any buds/marks on the wood that i should chop to??
