It is definitely NOT an acer john-debi. Apart from being upside down it is a Rhus typhina and your friend is right, it can be a total thug suckering everywhere so leave it in it's pot
Cacoethes: An irresistible urge to do something inadvisable
Ahhh we've all done it. I'm great in supermarkets - asking where a certain product is from a nearby 'helper' only to have it pointed out to me exactly where I am standing. Its the look of pity you get. Mind you if you laugh at yourself and share the humour with them the 'helpers' are 99% brilliant.

Rhus typhinus - aka stag horn sumach - lovely tree but has a tendency to sucker and spread so can be invasive.
You could try giving it a bigger pot and some fresh John Innes no 3 compost as it'll be hungry in that pot.

I think it is a Rhus typhina (Stag's horn sumach).
It does sucker so be careful where you plant it!

Thank you very much for the information. Looks like a bigger pot is called for!
Definitely. Despite being a thug it is a pretty tree and it gives a nice airy feel to the garden with lovely Autumn colour
