Identifying established shrubs

PollyRPollyR Posts: 64

Hi,

I need to learn about the established plants in my garden - they must all be over 10 years old at least and have been neglected for some time. Can anyone help me to identify some of these...?

There are loads more, but this would be a great start!

Thank you for looking!

the first is a Mahonia, you can prune some of the older stems right to the ground if it gets a bit lanky

    2nd an escallonia

    3rd Abelia

I think no 1 looks like a Mahonia (charity) no 2 could be escalonia and the 3rd one has the look of a  weigela but not sure.

Life's tragedy is that we get old too soon and wise too late.

Impressive knowledge - thank you! I'll add some more pics if you want to have a go at some more?

I'm planning to cut them all back quite hard to get them under control - they are all quite straggly and woody some of them. Is Autumn or Spring the best time to do this?

    agree re the spiraea,

disagree re the laurel, flowers are wrong, it's Viburnum tinus.

I think the last rather sick looking yellow one is another weigela

Fantastic! Thank you all for your help. That would have taken forever to find out by myself! The last one doesn't look very happy does it Nutcutlet? Hopefully a bit of attention will help.

some yellow leafed shrubs burn a bit in full hot sun but it's deciduous so you'll get another set next year
