Does anybody know what this is? It was given to me. It looks bit sorry for itself. A bit bare and lifeless ( probably why it was given to me lol). Is there anything I can do to try and bring it back to life a little bit or is it a lost cause! Thank you all

    yes I think that is/was a choisya.

I agree re don't let it dry out but that has the look of something that's been too wet for too long. Has it got drainage holes. You could cut off all the dead stuff, right back, repot in free draining compost and see what happens.

    I wouldn't botherimage

I would. I've rescued all sorts of dead things. image

So would I PP if only because when it survives it feels so good, and if it dies it would be one of those rare occasions when it wasn't my fault. My daughter says they smell of cat pee but I like mine it gives my 'shrubbery' a sunny look.

Go for it Judojub, you can always give it back recovered image

Ok. Thank you all. I will give it a go. Nothing to lose  guess! i will cut it back and repot in fresh compost. There is a tiny new green flower right at the bottom near the top of the soil and the stem was green underneath when I scratched it. Javing googled them they look quite nice. We will see I guess x

I've never noticed the smell herbaceous. The leaves are meant to smell slightly of basil. (image maybe your daughter has very fancy cats!). image

These are its roots! I'm not sure??

What are you not sure about Judojub? They look very promising! I believe all choisyas are shrubs (?) but only have experience of ternata, that looks a bit more delicate on the leaf and flower but still, good roots image

Daughter was a florist PP so has a different view of plants to me, I like mine growing! The cat pee thing is a constant debate as I think it is just a very sweet smell, can be a bit sickly when lots of flowers on it.

I'm never sure of anything herbaceous!! I have teased those roots out as they were all sort of wrapped around eachother and intertwined in a little ball. Maybe that's why it's flagging who knows. Let's see what happens. I shall reserve judgement on the smell if it makes it. That will determine if I give it back or not!image

    looks like choisya aztec pearl.

Roots look ok to me. I'd pot it in nice compost and give it a hair cut.As you say, nothing to lose but a wee bit if time and tlc.
