I would like to plant up a steel winter container with pink and purple plants that will be in shade
the container is 30 x 30 x 75cm long.
Any ideas on which plants ?
Have a look at Gautheria aka Pernyetta. They are small evergreen shrubs which like shade and have white flowers in late spring/early summer followed by fat berries in autumn and winter which can be anything from pink through crimson to purple. They'll need an ericaceous compost to do well and more than one in order to cross pollinate and keep on producing berries every year..
If you google "RHS+gautheria" you will find information about several forms and also suppliers.
I have some of the prostrate Gaultherias which would be ideal. The foliage reddens in autumn into winter. Purple Heucheras would be good with them.
Purple Hellebores for late winter into spring would also be perfect, and you could add some crocus for late winter as well
Hellebore Blue Lady
Gaultheria - taken last October
Thank You, Obelixx and Fairygirl.
Viburnum Dawn is a pink autumn/winter flowering shrub. It's not evergreen but I'm sure that will just make the flowers more impressive!
thank you all.
