Hello,
Im a beginner gardender.
I've had this clematis for 2 years. I've only got a patio so has to be in a pot. I just want some advise on how it is looking? Is it okay or should I cut it back to be a stump?
Also, it hasn't flowered, I feed it.

Also, the plant next to it got infested with aphids and all the leaves dropped off. Have I chopped it back enough or should I cut it tight down to be a stump?

Hmmm, it looks very much like the clematis armandii from here, not ideal for growing in a pot, don't prune it, just carry on watering and feeding, it is Winter flowering.
If you can, give it a much bigger pot filled with good John Innes no 3 compost mixed with a bit of multi purpose. Make sure it is kept watered but not drowning and feed it - good handful of slow release clematis food every spring and occasional drinks of liquid tomato food from spring to mid summer.
Train the stems as horizontally as possible to encourage flower formation and wait for the show this winter or next.

I'd have thought so. Don't want sappy new growth after mid summer as it won't have time to ripen before frosts.
Quite happy to be told I'm wrong though. I've only twice had flowers on a winter flowering cirrhosa clem here. 3 weeks of -20C at night killed that one off completely and took my 30' montana and a couple of macropetalas too. Thank heavens for viticellas!

My armandii seems enormous, but it's a midget compared to one in a garden I used to work in.
I can't see an armandii ever looking great in a pot, especially one as small as that. I think it's done well (or you've done well) to get that far
