Lobelia Help

imageimage

Hi All,

Could somebody please help me with Lobelia plant above? As you can see, a lot of the flowers have lost their colour and are looking slightly old :-(

Shall i pinch off all of these spent flowers along with the stalk they grow on? ... Or leave the stalk in tact?

Many Thanks,

Char

Hi Char. Saw your earlier post so welcome again. Don't worry about your Lobelia - its normal. Once the flowers are finished, just cut off the whole stem down to ground level - or as low as you can get and next year it will be beautiful again.

  • Ahh thanks ladybird, I'll just get the 1 set of flowers from each stalk with this 1 each year?

Is there a seed or anything in the dead flowers i can take to grow another next year? :-)

If you would like to have a go at growing some from seed (great fun but don't be too disappointed if you get failures!) just leave one of the flower stems and collect the seed when the pods are ripe and sow immediately in seed compost and keep warm over winter. You can also do bud cuttings now as well.

  • Thank-you!

That sound's ok, I did buy a mini greenhouse to pop a few plants in over winter (and to stop them drowning over the great British Summer image) and just so I can buy and sow seeds all year round.

As a gardener with so little knowledge though, I'm seeing pretty much everything as a little experiment so should probably expect a few disappointments every now and again ;-)

On the other hand, I was very disappointed  my Digitalis hadn't produced any flowers, only to find out it wont do till next year (haha) so there's often nice suprises still tucked in there for me too!
