Planting under shaded bay window
our house has a bay window which is North East facing and in shade most of the day.
id like to plant evergreen shrubs under it, ideally something with a bit of colour.
the area is about 70cm high, 2m40 wide and 1m deep. The soil is well drained but gets a bit of wind.
any suggestions please on suitable shrubs?

I have Osmanthus burkwoodii in a similar position. Nice green foliage and scented white flowers in late winter/early spring. Sarcococca (winter box) would also be happy - not unlike Osmanthus to look at, also with scented flowers. There are lot of variegated foliage plants too - Euonymous is ideal for a shady spot. Green/gold and green/cream varieties readily available.
You could also plant some Heucheras in front of your shrubs - lots of good colours and very easy to grow. Tiarellas and Heucherallas are similar. Don't forget some spring bulbs and maybe some hellebores too.
All nice and easy to work with - they mainly just get on with it. Hope that gives you a few ideas to start with

Hi fairygirl,
Thank you very much for your help, looking forward to getting started on it now!
Liking the osmanthus burkwoodii flowers.
Are all euonymus good with shade? Do like the autumn colour of the alatus compactus.
re the euonymus, I think those evergreen ones that Fairy mentioned are v. good in shade. Not sure how well alatus would colour up. and don't forget it's not red for long before the leaves drop off and hasn't much else to offer through the year
In the sticks near Peterborough
Ah - yes, alatus wouldn't do well there - different thing altogether unfortunately Simon. More of a specimen shrub / focal point really.
Perhaps you can find another spot for one of those in your garden
