bugs like my woodstain

I have to continually restain my garden furniture(almost every week) as there is some bug that overnight eats its way along the bench and table leaving bare wood.Any ideas what it may be and how to stop it.

Thanks

Have you tried bringing it indoors to dry, e.g., in a garage?

No. it's too big to do that and the wood is very dry at the moment. It doesn't seem to happen as much in the winter, but as soon as the weather heats up it starts again. It happens overnight,so  I'm thinking snails, slugs ,but cannot find any traces when I look first thing in the morning. It's a mystery I'm dying to get to the bottom of and stop having to restain every week.

Wood wasp? They just lay their eggs though - they don't harvest wood the way ordinary wasps do.

Can't think of anything that would be doing the amount of damage to need restaining every week though. Have you a pic of it so that we can see just how bad it is?

How about changing the woodstain to something less palatable

or sitting up all night watching

or fitting up and infra red camera and watch from the house,

or not worry about it  and stop re-staining (that would be my idle woman's choice)

Sprinkle a few slug pellets on it and see if you get anything.

    In London. Keen but lazy.
