Overzealous clearing - have I damaged my Cornus Controversa (variagated).
We have a magnificent cornus controversa (variagated) circa 14ft tall. in the garden. 4 weekends ago on a major clearout I think I may have damaged the root system as its now clearly shedding leaves.
Some roots remain exposed which I need to cover but am worried that if I have indeed damaged the root system it isirreparable and the cornus will continue to die.
Is there anything I can do to limit / impede / reverse / this decline at all?
Thank you in anticipation of any suggestions.

cover the roots, give it a good drink and speak kindly to it.
4 weeks is a long time to have roots exposed
